Carrie Graves grew up in the Charlotte, N.C. neighborhood of Cherry but recalls she and her friends going to Brooklyn for their entertainment. She discusses her favorite teachers at Morgan School, and the close relationships between its teachers and the parents. Ms Graves remembers her parents being active in the PTA and the local NAACP and talks about her favorite aunt. Ms Graves confirms that teachers were much more accessible during her childhood years. She views teachers and principals during her time as acting as school psychologists, assistant principals, and case managers. She recalls the high quality of her teachers and the fact that they did not need elaborate teaching aids. She also maintains that the teachers at Second Ward had the same passion and skills. Ms Graves believes that the earlier teachers had a more positive way of disciplining. As an example, she refers to a recent incident with an ROTC student and comments on how the incident was handled. This leads Ms Graves to a discussion concerning the education of her own daughter. Although they lived in Dalton Village, her daughter was assigned to Myers Park Elementary School. There was no busing for African American students until parents demanded a bus. Ms Graves uses this as an example of the lack of equal advantages between black and white, even after desegregation. She claims that she feels no patriotism towards this country because of the lack of social equity and feels that the African Americans still get the "leftovers." MS Graves ends with expressing her opinion that the students of today need the learning experiences she had at Morgan and details her ideas of "blackness."
